Some tips on setting up new crowdfunded projects
Planning Your Project
Planning your project carefully is the key to success. Make sure your vision for the project is clear and your funding goal is realistic (see ‘Setting Your Funding Goal’ below). Offer enticing rewards for your backers and use a wide range of support levels (from £5 to £500, for example). Make sure your main title and other headings are eye-catching yet concise. Your video pitch, if you choose to make one, should be short and to-the-point like an exciting movie trailer, and any photos uploaded should be original and intriguing.
N.B. We recommend that you compile all project information within a folder on your computer first in case you encounter any technical difficulties along the way. If you are new to Backer.org or crowdfunding in general you may wish to visit our Help page for more information. Alternatively, you can send us a message and we’d love to help you get started!
Setting Your Funding Goal
You may want to raise £500 to create a new piece of art or music etc. or you might be looking to raise up to £5,000 for a special performance or installation. Even if you want to raise as much as £50,000 for a large sculpture or research project, for example, Backer is a great tool to help you reach your goals. However, it is essential that you’ve thought carefully about who will want to donate to your cause and how many potential backers you can reach (see ‘Promoting Your Project’ below). Make sure you have taken into account the cost of rewards, postage and packaging (if sending physical products) and any associated fees… but most importantly, make sure you have enough money if successful to achieve everything you propose to achieve!
Promoting Your Project
Start thinking about ways in which you can promote your project before your campaign has even got under way. You will only receive pledges if you let your fans and potential supporters know you have launched a crowdfunder! It sounds obvious but poor communication and a lack of promotion is where most projects fall flat. Spread the word on social media, write letters to your friends and family, add regular updates to your Backer page and keep the momentum going right up until your campaign has ended. If you need any help or advice from us on promoting your project, please get in touch. Good luck!
